Competency 7: Apply Instructional Design Principles
- Identifies and analyzes learning and performance problems
To demonstrate competency seven, particularly in regard to the first subcategory in which I identified and analyzed problems, I have selected one of the case studies from EDCI 67200. I analyzed an instructional design scenario involving game creation for a high school social studies unit over Japanese Internment during World War II. I explored the pros and cons of using either a sandbox environment or a sequential module progression. While I considered factors, such as limited funding and time constraints, I most significantly analyzed the most effective instructional approach. I concluded that a sequential, narrative driven module game directly tied to standards with assessment throughout the progression would be most effective in meeting the needs of the learners.
- Design, plans, and develops instructional interventions using appropriate strategies and techniques
My EDCI 6600 Service Learning Blog provides evidence of my ability to design, plan and develop instructional interventions. The excerpts included with the artifact in particular refers to my use of Gagne's nine instructional events to plan instruction and then train a library media assistant in creating book catalog entries and printing barcodes in the an electronic library system.
- Develops an evaluation plan for a project based on stated goals and recognized standards.
In the Jet Blue case study, I developed an evaluation plan for Jetblue Airways training program. The plan mirrored the philosophies demonstrated through their customer-service approach which emphasized consistency and excellence. The evaluation program, utilizing the four levels of Kirkpatrick, measured knowledge and behavior. The multiple inputs would create a full picture of training successes and needs. In moving forward professionally, I must strive to incorporate and utilize assessment. The drive to create content and implement programs often squeezes out the important work of analyzing current programs.
