Competency 6: Participate Actively in the Profession
Identifies and participates in communities of practice within the field of Educational
To show evidence of my active participation in the Field of Educational Technology, I have included two e-mails verifying my registration to professional technology conferences for members of those organizations in Indiana, ICE (Indiana Computer Educators) and HECC (Hoosier Educational Computer Coordinators). The titles of the organizations are somewhat misleading, because members include a wide range of educators who are actively engaging technology and moving students into a digital learning environment. Tweets from the most recent HECC Conference at https://twitter.com/hashtag/hecc2014?src=hash show the range of activities and topics from “Virtual Learning Days for Inclement Weather” to “Google Classroom” to “Symbaloo” to “Design Your Environment” to “Digital Teacher’s Toolbox” to “Journey to the Land of Transformation (SAMR, TPACK and ISTE).” ICE was smaller this year, but Kevin Honeycutt, Dave Burgess, and Leslie Fisher made it memorable and inspirational. Most notably, Kevin Honeycutt well articulated the importance of digital legacy for students and the benefits of purposefully creating a positive digital footprint. By belonging to these organizations, following the stream of information that they provide and attending their conference to meet others and grow from their experiences, I am staying connected in my field. To grow professionally, I would like to not just attend and participate in professional organizations with accompanying events, but I would like to make a unique and meaningful contribution. As an administrator in a small rural school corporation, I have a perspective that is beneficial to others. As I travel to events throughout the state, I hear the question, “How do we make this move to a 1:1 digital learning environment on a small budget?” At South Putnam as we make that journey, we are answering that question. Now, I must make a more purposeful effort in communicating out that success.
